The views of non-governmental organizations are also sought on a wide range of issues where such consultation is appropriate and under deci- sions taken by the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council, the Commission on Human Rights and its Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights (formerly Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities). The views and information they provide are included in the official reports.
Non-governmental organizations also play an important role in promoting respect for human rights and in informing the general public of United Nations activities in the field of human rights through education and public information campaigns.
